POV: You dropped your car off at Park On King’s state-of-the-art parking facilities, were dropped at your terminal by our chauffeur service, and are waiting to board your plane. Everything has gone according to plan, until you realise you’ve left your book under your seat in the car. Suddenly, you are dreading the next 2-6 hours of travel.
Don’t panic; we’ve put together a list of books to read based on your flight time, covering both domestic and international destinations. We’ve listed a variety of options, from classics to newer novels, that are likely to be available at your terminal. It’s even more satisfying knowing that you could complete your novel during the designated flight time.
If You’re Travelling from Sydney to AdelaideÂ
For destinations of about 2 hours, you’ll be able to tackle George Orwell’s Animal Farm. This allegorical novel is set on a farm which has been taken over by unfairly treated animals. After their liberation from the farmer, the animals quickly realise that not everyone is equal. Readers are encouraged to unpack the dangers of idealism, which often still ring true in politics today. Although this novel is 80 years old and set in Stalinist Russia, it still offers many useful lessons, and with the flight time to Adelaide at 2 hours and 10 minutes, it is the perfect read.
If You’re Flying from Sydney to Perth
The flight from Sydney to Perth is about 4 hours and 55 minutes. This is a significant amount of time you could dedicate to reading Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet. Set in Warwickshire in the 1580s, this work of historical fiction follows the life of William Shakespeare’s wife and her grief after the death of their young son, Hamnet, from the bubonic plague. Have a pack of tissues ready because this book is certainly a tearjerker. The literary prose is fast-paced and will keep you hooked throughout the flight. This book is a little longer than your flight time, at 5 hours and 30 minutes, so you’ll want to start reading when you’re on the tarmac.
If You’re Travelling from Sydney to Darwin
With an average read time of 4 hours and 32 minutes, Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid’s Secret is the perfect read for your flight from Sydney to Darwin. The book follows an ex-con who takes a housekeeping job working for a wealthy man and his wife. She begins to suspect the husband is abusing his wife and strives to uncover the truth. This gripping thriller is the sequel to The Housemaid, which was released in cinemas last year. Although this is the second book, the plot stands on its own and can be devoured without context. It’s an absolute page-turner and an easy read to pass the time.
If You’re Flying from Sydney to Queenstown
On your 3-hour and 15-minute flight to Queenstown, you can make a cracking start on reading Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller, Verity. Although the average read time for this book is 4 hours and 15 minutes, you’ll practically finish it by the time you factor in the time spent on the tarmac either side. Verity is about a struggling writer who is hired to complete the remaining books in a bestselling series after an author, Verity Crawford, is left incapacitated by an accident. While going through Verity’s notes, the author discovers a disturbing, unfinished autobiography that sets off alarms. The movie adaptation is set to release in October, so now is the perfect time to read the book and get ahead of any
spoilers.
If You’re Travelling from Sydney to Bali
Last but not least, if you’re travelling between Sydney and Bali, you can immerse, or reimmerse yourself, in a cult classic, The Hunger Games. This dystopian thriller by Suzanne Collins is set in the ruins of North America, where 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take part in the Hunger Games — a brutal fight-to-the-death tournament televised for the entertainment of elite society in the Capitol. The book has sold millions of copies worldwide and remains culturally relevant, with another prequel movie set for release later this year. This book will take you through the whole 6 hours and 45 minutes of your flight, but it is well worth it. While you’re at it, why not read the trilogy on your vacation!
