7 Lesser-Known European Cities You Need to Add to Your Itinerary

Category:

Holiday, Travel

You’ve probably noticed a lot of your friends living their best lives in Europe lately. So it may come as no surprise that tourism across this popular continent has skyrocketed in 2023 following three years of restrictions. Everyone wants to be in Europe right now, we just can’t get enough of it, but when everyone is flocking to the same, tourist-heavy spots, it can make your trip a little less fun overall. Don’t worry though, rather than make your European escape nothing more than a pipedream, visit these lesser-known cities and enjoy your well-deserved holiday — minus the longer queues and mild claustrophobia.

Innsbruck, Austria

If you’re looking for an authentic Austrian experience then you can’t look past the quaint city of Innsbruck. Nestled in the Austrian Alps, Innsbruck has a similar charm to its much bigger siblings Vienna and Salzburg, but with fewer selfie sticks floating around your face and a more laidback vibe. Take time to stroll through the beautiful Altstadt (Old Town), admire the colourful buildings that line the river, and enjoy the most delicious apple strudel you’ve ever tasted. Both skiers and non-skiers alike will be mesmerised by the gorgeous snowy mountains and breathtaking summit views. You don’t want to skip Alpenzoo — one of the highest-elevation zoos in Europe — or miss out on a trip just outside of Innsbruck to visit the truly unique Swarovski Crystal World. Our top tip? Visit during late November or December to get a real taste of the annual Christmas markets — think artisan goods, moreish food and hot mulled wine. No matter how you choose to spend your time, there’s so much to see and do in this magical Austrian town.

Milos, Greece

You’ve likely heard of the popular island of Mykonos in Greece, a favourite among Australians, but its humble relative Milos has just as much to offer while being lighter on the crowds and much more considerate to your wallet. Surrounded by the same signature, crystal blue water as Mykonos and Santorini, Milos is the perfect destination to swim and relax. To make the most of your time here, admire the island’s many breathtaking beaches, explore sea caves and roam local fishing villages. When the day’s done and dusted, you’ll be mesmerised by incredible sunsets over the water’s edge. Now this is how you live out your Mediterranean dreams!

Regensburg, Germany

If you’re after a classic, Bavarian-style German adventure then you may be tempted to join the fray of tourists gathering in Munich, where the annual Oktoberfest is hosted. However, if you’re looking for a more low-key expedition that’s just as jam-packed with culture, beers and less of a financial commitment, we can definitely recommend travelling to Regensburg instead. Just like in Munich, there’s plenty to see, from well-preserved medieval buildings and museums to peaceful gardens and colourful houses. For the perfect picture, walk across the town’s stone bridge after sunset and take a snap of the buildings, bridge and river illuminated by lights — it’s like a German fairytale! Of course, when it comes to Bavarian food think giant everything, pretzels, sausages, schnitzels… you name it, all washed down with a stein (or two) of beer. The town even has its own Oktoberfest event, known as Dult, which we can guarantee will be a more authentic and enjoyable experience than its more well-known counterpart. All we can say is prost (cheers)!

Córdoba, Spain

Often overshadowed by the likes of Seville and Granada, Córdoba in Spain is a must-visit travel destination, especially for passionate history buffs. Between finding the perfect Instragram-worthy angle of the city’s famous Roman Bridge, squeeze in plenty of time to explore the magnificent, UNESCO-listed La Mezquita (The Great Mosque). Showcasing extravagant Islamic architecture and featuring a bright courtyard lined with orange trees, cypresses, and palm trees — the mosque is a symbol for the complicated history of Córdoba. After learning all about the history and culture of this unique Spanish city, stop by the Hammam Al Andalus, a traditional Arabian-style bath offering massage and beauty treatments. You’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time as you enjoy a few hours of luxurious pampering.

Bern, Switzerland

While many mistake Zürich as the capital city of Switzerland, it’s actually the underrated city of Bern that owns this title. Built around a crook in the Aare River, Bern is a pure delight for the senses and the soul. Boasting snowy summits, culture and good food (namely cheese and chocolate) similar to more well-known Swiss cities like Zürich and Lucerne, there’s a long list of reasons why Bern should be number one on your itinerary. Although Bern isn’t a cheap place to visit (no Swiss city is), the memories you’ll make here are priceless. Meander past historical buildings or even float down the Aare River that runs through the city to experience the awe-inspiring, incomparable beauty of Switzerland. For an experience that’s completely distinctive, be sure to visit the city’s famous Bear Park. Owing its name to the bear, this animal is a revered symbol in Bern, and the bears at this park have plenty of space to roam, interact and even swim. The park is open year-round and entrance is free.

Gdańsk, Poland

Located on the Baltic Coast to the north, Gdańsk in Poland is pretty underrated in comparison to other Polish cities. Sometimes more well-known by its German name, Danzig, Gdańsk is a complex mix of its Polish, Prussian, and German heritage, giving it a very different and individual vibe to cities like Krakow and Warsaw. Take one of the free guided tours of the city to admire historic landmarks and vibrant architecture, and stroll along the city’s iconic harbour. Stop by museums to learn about the medieval and modern history of Gdańsk, including its German occupation during World War I and World War II. To view the city in all its glory, climb the 82-metre-high tower of St Mary’s Church — the view up here is spectacular. After exploring, sit down to enjoy a hearty bowl of traditional Polish dumplings, known as pierogi, or a platter of fresh seafood.

Trondheim, Norway

While many will follow the tourist road most travelled and opt for closer alternatives in Norway like Oslo or Bergen, venturing further north to a Norwegian city like Trondheim will be well worth your while. For a city that’s very cold (trust us, you’ll definitely need to pack your thermals for this one!), the atmosphere is cosy, charming and colourful. To get the most out of Trondheim simply take it easy and enjoy the scenery. Explore Bakklandt, an adorable neighbourhood lined with street-side restaurants, cafes and bars, and choose a relaxing spot to eat and people-watch peacefully. If you’re after more adventure, ride the tram out of the city and hike on one of the many trails available, or take a trip to a stunning Norwegian fjord — there’s nothing else in the world quite like it!

Happy Customers!

Best place to park near the airport if you are travelling domestically or overseas. Prices are reasonable but their customer service is what makes them shine! Always a pleasant experience!

It's very close to the airport, the shuttle service worked beautifully, and it was reasonably priced. However, above all I was impressed by the friendliness of every employee I met working there.
