Air Travel Health Hacks

Going to new destinations is exciting but the journey from Point A to Point B is never the best part. With flying usually marking the beginning and the end of a trip, it’s important to feel and keep yourself healthy whilst in the air. No one wants to land in a new city or country feeling sore and sick. We have put together our favourite and most helpful hacks on how to make your next flying experience as comfortable as possible.

Hydration is Key

It’s very easy to become dehydrated on a flight. Although you might only feel light-headed and sleepy on board, the real issue is when you get off the plane as you can experience headaches and dizziness that could intensify your jet-lag. The best practice to avoid this is to bring an empty water bottle with you to the airport, where you can fill it up after going through security and ask for it to be filled up when you’re in the sky.

Drink Wisely

Since we’re on the topic of hydration, it’s important to choose the right type of drinks when you’re in the air. As tempting as it might be to have a glass of wine or a beer, or even a coffee during the flight it will end up causing you more harm than good. An increased heart rate or feeling bloated isn’t a great feeling whilst flying. Stick to herbal teas or even sparkling water as it can help to settle queasiness and keep you relaxed.

Stand Up

If you’re on a flight for more than 3 hours it’s important to stand up and stretch every so often, especially if you’re in economy and have limited leg room. Prolonged sitting in tight spaces (such as a plane seat) can cause Deep Vein Thrombosis or serious leg cramps. If you don’t feel comfortable to start doing some yoga moves in the aisle, go to the bathroom. Not only will standing in the inevitable line allow your blood to flow, but once you’re inside the cubicle you can do some simple stretches.

Sanitise and Moisturise

Planes are unfortunately a breeding ground for bacteria and infections to spread. Protect yourself from airborne diseases by washing your hands, covering your mouth when coughing and disposing your tissues once used. Bring a pack of tissues and hand sanitiser to make things easier for yourself. It’s also important to stay moisturised, as pressurised aeroplane air is notorious for being dry and cold. Carry a travel-size bottle of moisturiser to keep your hands and face soft and fresh.

Block it All Out

Attempting to sleep on a plane can be a serious struggle. Not only are the plane seats not exactly ideal for sleeping, but you are surrounded by other people and the noise they make, as well as the noise and light from the plane. To get a little bit of sleep on your next red-eye flight, bring sound-cancellation headphones and your own eye mask to block out all the distractions.

For Extra Comfort

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference. Brining items like peppermint gum and a neck pillow can make a flight so much more comfortable and manageable. With planes always being cold, we recommend wearing closed-in shoes and socks (preferably compression socks) and a warm jacket that can double as a blanket.

Following these simple tips should make your flight as easy as possible. You can make your whole travel experience convenient by driving and parking your car at Park on King. Happy Customers!

Best place to park near the airport if you are travelling domestically or overseas. Prices are reasonable but their customer service is what makes them shine! Always a pleasant experience!

It's very close to the airport, the shuttle service worked beautifully, and it was reasonably priced. However, above all I was impressed by the friendliness of every employee I met working there.

Have been a customer on Park on King about 4 times now. Always impressed by their service and going above and beyond to make you feel like you're in safe hands.

The team was on time and informative and knew exactly where to be for for our return transfers. Made it very easy especially with 2 young children.

My goodness, the service was excellent and efficient on time for drop off and pick up. They took the hassle away and the trouble of trying to find a safe spot to park your car and return to pick it up.
